Schedule:

9:30 - Doors Open

9:45 - 10:00 - Introductions

10:00 - 11:00 - Screening of our Filmmaking Challenge entries (60 mins)

11:00 - 11:15 - Coffee Break

11:15 - 12 - Filmmaker Masterclass - Tamara Kotevska

We're delighted to welcome the director of our opening night film The Walk, Tamara Kotevska, to talk about her career in documentaries. Tamara Kotevska is the Oscar®-nominated director of HONEYLAND, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, winning the Grand Jury Prize and Special Jury Award for Impact for Change. It also went on to become the first documentary to ever receive Academy Award® nominations for both Best International Feature Film and Best Documentary Feature. THE WALK is her follow-up feature.

This masterclass summarises the overall experience in achieving her life dream in documentary filmmaking. From her beginnings to the great success of the feature documentary film Honeyland (Double Oscar Nominee).

Tamara will speak about her experience in documentary filmmaking. From finding the topic, to developing the structure and the characters, the process of shooting and postproduction. She'll share some of the experiences of how she started financing her own independent films, might be a valuable lesson for anyone who wants to start something of their own and has an idea they believe in.

Every filmmaker aims for success, but getting such a huge success is equally stressful and it brings tons of obligations, just like all the other parts of the filmmaking. Honeyland is the only film in the history of film that got 2 nominations in 2 different categories: for fiction and for documentary. Also, it got more than 40 Grand Prix in all the corners of the Planet. The authors had more than 100 flights in one year. How does an ordinary human being deal with such a dramatic change?

12:00 - 1:15 - The Producer-Director Relationship (75 mins)

Producers are crucial for the smooth running of a documentary production, but for directors used to working alone, finding the right one can be an intimidating prospect. So how do a producer and a director work together on documentaries, and what should they be looking for in one another? Featuring a panel of top UK producers speaking from experience, and a case study of new feature documentary Grand Theft Hamlet  (SXSW Documentary Feature Jury Award) with the producer and directors

Speakers include Nikki Parrott (Tigerlily Two), Laura Shacham (She Makes), Becca Wolff (Grasp The Nettle), Sam Crane (Grand Theft Hamlet), Tolu Stedford (Story Compound), Christo Hird (Dartmouth Films), Rebecca Mark Lawson (Tyke Films) and Chloe White (Whalebone FIlms)

1:15 - 2:15 - Lunch break

2:15 - 3:30 - Artists, Documentary Making and Celluloid (75mins)

Many documentary makers started as moving image artists, and documentarists can often be as at home in the gallery as they are in the cinema. In this session, we'll meet documentary makers, artists and exhibitors working with celluloid and we’ll discuss bridging the artists’ film and documentary worlds

Speakers include Georgia Bradburn (Filmmaker, The Stimming Pool), Sapphire Goss (Filmmaker), Paul Daly (Filmmaker), Maria Palacios Cruz (Open City Docs), Dawn Bothwell (Berwick Film and Media Arts)

Hosted by Jo Nolan (Screen South)

3:30 - 4:45 - Funder and Exhibitor Plenary (75 mins)

Your chance to hear from documentary commissioning/funding, distribution and exhibition executives and ask them anything. Speakers include representatives from BFI Doc Society, Dogwoof, The Guardian, The Whickers, London Short Film Festival, Together Films, and Arts Council England

5:00 - 6:00 - Talent Mixer hosted by BFI Doc Society and Screen South (60mins)

Mix and match with your fellow filmmakers and creative storytellers working across the South East, meet new collaborators and chat with the speakers from the day. The Talent Mixer takes place at eclectic arts hub Kollectiv (Tontine Street entrance).

The industry day is made possible thanks to the support of our partners, Screen South and BFI Doc Society.
